An RV, or recreational vehicle, is a vehicle or trailer with living quarters that’s designed for traveling. RVs can range from basic to luxurious and come in many different types, including motorhomes, campervans, and fifth-wheel trailers. 

Here are some things to know about RVs:

  • Types RVs can be self-driving or towed by another vehicle. Self-driving RVs can be pushers, which have the engine in the back, or pullers, which have the engine in the front.

RVs can have a variety of amenities, including kitchens, bathrooms, beds, air conditioning, water heaters, and televisions. 

Size

Larger RVs may have slide-outs or canopies that open up when parked to save space. 

Classes

Motorized RVs are categorized into four classes, with Class A being the largest and most standard. Class A RVs are often good for year-round living and can include appliances like a stove, refrigerator, and toilet. 

Ownership

In 2021, 11.2 million households in the US owned an RV, which is a 62% increase over the previous two decades. 

Vacation costs

A survey found that traveling by RV on vacation can save 23–59% on vacation costs.
